ECOHERENCE FRAMEWORK™‍ ‍ Designing towards regenerative outcomes

01

Why it matters

Every organisation is part of a living web, from the biosphere to the local ecosystem. Our choices reach beyond the immediate project - shaping the places, relationships and the conditions in which human and beyond human life can flourish.

Aterre helps companies, communities and cities translate sustainability and impact commitments into products, services, strategies, practices and experiences that restore ecological, social and economic wellbeing.

Grounded in living-systems and stewardship principles, our work considers not only what organisations create, but also how they operate, and how this shapes their impact on the wider world that their decisions touch.

02

When to work with us

You may be asking:

  • Are we losing out on potential contracts to competitors, because we don’t have a coherent sustainability agenda?

  • We are improving individual parts of the project or organisation, but is the system itself becoming more regenerative?

  • We are choosing circular materials but it’s still within a linear system. So what else needs to shift?

  • Do our strategic ambitions, internal practices and external impact reflect the commitments we make?

  • How can we help our staff and clients experience, understand and value a deeper relationship with the living world? And do our actions demonstrate this?

These questions and many more can arise when developing a strategic vision, rethinking a product or service, shaping a place, or deciding where to direct resources and future aims.

03

Whole-systems thinking

A circular material may be innovated within an inherently linear system. An individual project may succeed while placing pressure on the ecosystem elsewhere. An organisation’s external ambition may be difficult to recognise in its everyday decisions.

These are questions of relationship, not simply performance. Where are the dependencies? Who and what bears the impact? What needs to change for an improvement in one part to support the health of the whole?

We work with organisations ready to examine those questions, in order to move from isolated interventions towards a more coherent and holistic way of designing and acting.

04

How it Helps

Organisations can have strong sustainability and impact intentions without fully understanding their impact on the wider living system, or whether their choices genuinely support the regenerative outcomes they claim. This can create a gap between intention, internal practice and external impact - sometimes undermining credibility, damaging reputation and leaving them vulnerable to greenwashing.

We help you explore, develop and define a holistic approach to Regenerative Futures, to enable you to lead by example, guided by congruent Stewardship principles. Starting with our Ecoherence Check™ to ensure your intentions, practice and outcomes align, setting you up to be future-fit, adaptive and resilient - able to steward whatever change lies ahead in collaboration with our planet.

Regenerative Strategy

Strategy creates the foundation and road map to achieving effective and impactful action, guiding teams towards greater collaborative outcomes. So it is vital to underpin this strategy with the regenerative values and principles that foster a sustainable future.

We offer our expertise to develop strategies that are firmly rooted in a sound regenerative framework through research, analysis, and stakeholder engagement, thus identifying sustainable opportunities that champion congruence, integrity, and alignment with a regenerative future, considering environmental, social, and economic aspects.

Regenerative Systems

Strategy alone is not enough, the structure supporting your strategy is equally vital, as these two elements are intrinsically intertwined. Without organisational health there is no long term sustainable success, without planetary health, there is no human success.

Our Regenerative Systems consultancy goes beyond conventional management consultancy approaches and looks at working practices, structure and culture through a regenerative lense. We believe meaningful success lies in building congruent and aligned systems that promote sustainability and regeneration across the entire framework of your organisation.

Regenerative Design & Consultancy

Regenerative Design draws upon a broad biophilic and living-systems design framework that allows us to design in symbiosis with the planet, utilising nature’s innate design wisdom, to create abundantly healthy and restorative spaces.

These design principles can be applied from the small scale to the large, from basic materiality to fundamental design methodology and process. Bringing the benefits of regenerative design to your project, designing spaces that enable humans to live in healthy, sustainable, technologically advanced, natural environments.

We create design schemes for residential, office, commercial, hospitality, community and public realm spaces, as well as offering consultancy services to support on specific elements of your project.

Innovation, Adaptability & Experience

Regenerative Design puts people and planet at the centre of the process. Drawing inspiration from nature's brilliant design solutions, our studio can develop design approaches that optimise resource efficiency, maximise functionality, and create spaces that easily adapt to changing needs. Clients can expect environments that promote well-being, productivity, and a sense of connection to nature.

In practice, this can be via the use of nature’s geometry via biomimicry, the use of bio-fabricated or natural materials, nature based design and living systems wisdom, the creation of restorative and sustainable design schemes, circular processes that work with the natural world, or simply by bringing a connection to nature into indoor or urban spaces. It is a world envisioned in harmony with the planet that sustains us and which harnesses future technology to do so.

Living & Bio-fabricated Structures

We create bespoke living architecture at the intersection between technology and nature, employing biomimicry, circular design processes, biofabricated or sustainably resourced materials to create living and biofabricated structures that evolve and change in response to the environment, creating their own ecosystem in harsh urban environments. These can be seamlessly integrated into regenerative planting schemes and plantscapes to create spaces of contemplation and respite for urban communities.

“Regenerative systems are those in which each element is interconnected. Each relies on the others to maintain and thrive for the betterment of all” NetImpact.org

  • Regenerative Design goes beyond sustainability and actively contributes to restore and replenish what human activities have radically deteriorated.

    CSM - MA Regenerative Design

  • A ‘regenerative’ mindset is one that sees the world as built around reciprocal and co-evolutionary relationships, where humans, other living beings and ecosystems rely on one another for health, and shape (and are shaped by) their connections with one another. It recognises that addressing the interconnected social and environmental challenges we face is dependent on rebalancing and restoring these relationships.

    RSA - Regenerative Futures

  • Instead of perpetuating an anthropocentric mindset which leads to the depletion of our underlying life-support systems, regenerative design goes beyond sustainable and circular design principles to actively promote a multi-species approach where human and non-human species co-habit holistically.
